RS485 isolator and repeater for Modbus

Article number PR525x001

This isolator and repeater breaks ground loops in an RS485 or Modbus network. Placed at the right points, it allows longer cables or higher data rates. Input and output are galvanically isolated from each other and from the supply, which can be 12 or 24 V DC. The termination resistor and the pull-up and pull-down resistors are enabled per side with DIP switches.

  • Supply 9 to 30 V DC, for 12 and 24 V systems
  • Input RS485 (A, B and shield)
  • Output RS485 (A, B and shield), repeated

Setup

  1. Connect the shield of both the incoming and the outgoing RS485 cable to terminals 3 and 6; the network does not work properly without it.
  2. If the module sits at one end of the cabling, switch on DIP switch 1 on that side (SW1-1 for the input, SW2-1 for the output): it places 120 Ω between A and B. The network must be terminated like this at both ends.
  3. Switch on DIP switches 2 and 3 (1 kΩ pull-up from line A to 5 V, 1 kΩ pull-down from line B to 0 V), so the data lines never sit at an undefined level; otherwise data can be corrupted or unwanted pulses can occur.
  4. Switch 4 of SW1 and SW2 is not used.

Application

  • Breaking ground loops in an RS485 or Modbus network
  • Longer cables or higher data rates in an RS485 network
  • Galvanically isolating parts of a data network from each other
