PWM valve driver with slow ramp-up and ramp-down, potentiometer control, two outputs

Article number PR159s01

The PR159s01 drives two high-side switched PWM outputs of approximately 225 Hz; the duty cycle follows the position of an external potentiometer of 1 to 100 kΩ. A voltage of 5 to 30 V on IN1 switches on output 1, on IN3 output 2. The isolated 5 V output on A1 and A5 supplies the potentiometer and the inputs, so no extra supply is needed. V-max sets the maximum duty cycle (50 to 100 %), V-start the minimum (0 to 50 %), and Ramp-up and Ramp-down the rise and fall rate.

  • Supply 18 to 30 V DC
  • Input potentiometer 1 kΩ to 100 kΩ on A1, A3 and A5 (IN2, 5 V max.); IN1 (A2) and IN3 (A4) switch on output 1 and 2 with 5 to 30 V DC
  • Output two PWM outputs, high-side switched, on B3 and B4 and on B5 and B6; only one active at a time

Setup

  1. Connect the supply to B1 (minus) and B2 (plus), the first load to B3 and B4 and the second load to B5 and B6.
  2. Connect the potentiometer to A1 (plus), A3 (wiper) and A5 (minus).
  3. Connect a switch between A1 (5 V) and IN1 (A2) for output 1, and between A1 and IN3 (A4) for output 2.
  4. Set the maximum duty cycle with V-max (50 to 100 %) and the minimum with V-start (0 to 50 %). Turning clockwise increases the value.
  5. Set the rate at which the output rises with Ramp-up and the rate at which it falls with Ramp-down.

Application

  • Letting hydraulic valves open and close smoothly with PWM

PR159 series: PWM drivers with two outputs

The modules in the PR159 series drive two high-side switched PWM outputs; only one output is active at a time. The input side (terminals A1 to A5) is galvanically isolated from the outputs and the supply (terminals B1 to B6). Four trimmers on the module (V-max, V-start, Ramp-up and Ramp-down) set the outputs and, on most versions, the ramp rates; turning clockwise increases the value. This lets a hydraulic valve open and close smoothly, for example. The modules run on 18 to 30 V DC, deliver up to 4 A in total and are suitable for 0 to 80 °C; dimensions 45 x 82 mm.
