PR181 module in DIN rail enclosure, front three-quarter view

0-5 A AC to 0-20 mA signal conditioner, isolated, with display

Article number PR181-X015

The PR181-X015 measures a 0-5 A alternating current, for example from a current transformer, and converts it into a galvanically isolated 0-20 mA signal: 0 A RMS gives 0 mA, 5 A RMS gives 20 mA. Measurement uses a magnetic field sensor, so the module produces little heat and needs no external shunt resistor. The input range can be set up to 7.5 A; the lower and upper limits of the output are set on the display. Input, output and supply are galvanically isolated from each other.

  • Supply 9 to 30 V DC
  • Input alternating current 0-5 A RMS on terminals 3 and 5; range adjustable up to 7.5 A RMS max.
  • Output 0-20 mA as delivered, 0 to 21 mA; lower and upper limit adjustable

Setup

  1. When measuring the consumption of a 230 V AC device, always place a current transformer between that device and the module.
  2. Connect the module according to the terminal table and switch on the supply.
  3. For an input range other than 5 A: select milliAmps Max, use UP and DOWN to set the current at which the output should give 20 mA, in mA (7500 max.), and confirm with OK.
  4. Set the lower limit of the output with Output mA Low and the upper limit with Output mA Max: change the value with UP and DOWN and confirm with OK.
  5. If required, set the rise and fall rate of the output with Output Ramp-Up and Output Ramp-Dwn.
  6. Converterstatus shows the actual current in amperes and the output level as a percentage; milliAmps Low is always 0 on this module.
  7. Go to the SAVE menu to store the new settings.

Application

  • Connecting a current transformer to a 0-20 mA input with galvanic isolation
  • Measuring the current consumption of a 230 V AC device, via a current transformer

PR181 series: signal conditioners with display

The modules in the PR181 series are set up on the display on the module, using the UP, DOWN and OK buttons. On most versions the lower and upper limits of input and output are set independently, as is the rise and fall rate of the output; the settings of each module are listed on the product page under Setup. With an adjustable rise and fall rate, motors, pumps, valves and hydraulics can be driven smoothly. On versions with an analogue output, that output is galvanically isolated from input and supply to prevent ground loops. New settings are stored through the SAVE menu. The standard DIN rail enclosure measures 45 x 83 mm (board 42.6 x 72 mm); versions with more terminals are wider. Most modules run on 9 to 30 V DC at -25 to 55 °C, non-condensing.

For some conversions there is also a version without display and without galvanic isolation in the PR100 series: it is set up with push buttons and runs on 12 and 24 V DC (operating range 11 to 30 V DC). Where one exists, it is listed on the product page under Other version.
