PR181-X031 in DIN rail enclosure, front three-quarter view: twelve screw terminals and three plug-in boards

Up/down pulse input to dual 4-20 mA signal conditioner, isolated, with display

Article number PR181-X031

The PR181-X031 converts an up and a down pulse input into two 4-20 mA signals. Both outputs are galvanically isolated from the input, the supply and each other; the lower and upper limits are set independently for each output on the display. Output speed in seconds sets how long the outputs take to go from 0 to 100 % and back. The inputs accept high-side and low-side switched contacts of 20 to 50 V DC; LED 1 (up) and LED 2 (down) light up on a pulse.

  • Supply 9 to 30 V DC
  • Input two pulse inputs, UP and DOWN, 20 to 50 V DC; high-side or low-side switched
  • Output two 4-20 mA outputs as delivered, 21 mA max.; lower and upper limit adjustable per output

Setup

  1. Connect the contacts to terminals 5 (UP) and 6 (DOWN). For high-side switched contacts, terminal 4 (common) goes to the minus; for low-side switched contacts, to the plus.
  2. Connect the supply and the outputs according to the terminal table and switch on the supply.
  3. Check the inputs: LED 1 lights up on a pulse at UP, LED 2 on a pulse at DOWN.
  4. Use Output speed in seconds to set how long the outputs take to go from 0 to 100 % and back.
  5. Set the limits of output 1 with Output 1 min and Output 1 max: change the value with UP and DOWN and confirm with OK. This lets you set an output to 0-20 mA, for example.
  6. Set the limits of output 2 in the same way with Output 2 min and Output 2 max.
  7. The Status menu gives an overview of the converter.
  8. Go to the SAVE menu to store the new settings.

Application

  • Converting an up and down contact into two isolated 4-20 mA signals
  • Reading high-side or low-side switched contacts, including PNP and NPN outputs and volt-free contacts

PR181 series: signal conditioners with display

The modules in the PR181 series are set up on the display on the module, using the UP, DOWN and OK buttons. On most versions the lower and upper limits of input and output are set independently, as is the rise and fall rate of the output; the settings of each module are listed on the product page under Setup. With an adjustable rise and fall rate, motors, pumps, valves and hydraulics can be driven smoothly. On versions with an analogue output, that output is galvanically isolated from input and supply to prevent ground loops. New settings are stored through the SAVE menu. The standard DIN rail enclosure measures 45 x 83 mm (board 42.6 x 72 mm); versions with more terminals are wider. Most modules run on 9 to 30 V DC at -25 to 55 °C, non-condensing.

For some conversions there is also a version without display and without galvanic isolation in the PR100 series: it is set up with push buttons and runs on 12 and 24 V DC (operating range 11 to 30 V DC). Where one exists, it is listed on the product page under Other version.
